Making the jump from two wheels to four was not a decision we entered upon lightly. We purchased a Toyota 4WD, guiding it through its transformation for our current expedition from Northern Norway to South Africa. I’m hoping all our efforts and choices will reap the rewards from Cape to Cape, and that the gear and aspirations on which we’ve loaded up will see us through the next leg of swapping the life conventional for the drive of a lifetime. It’s hard not to grin.
There are an enormous amount of reasons the iKamper Skycamp was the most successful tent in Kickstarter history, raising over 2.3 million dollars.
From the start, it should be noted I am not selling roof top tents. This is an independent review of the iKamper Skycamp: Rocky Black Edition.
So if you’re looking for a family-friendly roof top tent, then look no further. The ease of use, quality of build, and details that make the iKamper Skycamp what it is will blow your mind. If you’re into overlanding, or getting into it, then consider this unit.
Spoiler alert: the iKamper Skycamp is incredible. It’s everything we hoped for in a roof top tent, and more. If you’re one of those people who just wants to get to the bottom of it quickly…go out and get one. You won’t regret it.
Landon & Maggie head through the Colorado high country on a car camping adventure with the iKamper X-Cover! In Colorado, there’s no need to settle for an average campsite. Whether it’s a one-night stopover after a long day’s hike or a base camp for a few days of fishing or relaxation in the mountain air, you’ve worked hard to get there and might as well enjoy it. The public land access for hopping on the road, finding a public camping spot is limitless. Having the ability to car camp is the most versatile means of accessing unique locations throughout the high country.
Like many National Parks, Zion has a free shuttle that will take you to many of the main stops along the Canyon Scenic Drive. What wedidn’trealize, is that when the shuttle is running during the summer months, absolutelynoprivate vehicles are allowed on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive!! The only access through the scenic drive is by the free shuttle bus! So we were pretty bummed when we saw that because we would have loved to stop at a few places along the route and since we had our dog, Chevy, with us- the shuttle was not an option because there are no dogs allowed on the shuttles. This is also where most of the trailheads are for hiking- so if you’re looking to hike at Zion, be prepared to take the shuttle (and don’t bring your pets along!)
After spending the previous day at Arches and Canyonlands, we woke up at theKOA in Green Riverand headed out to Capitol Reef which was about a 1.5 hour drive.
Again, we knew going into this trip that we would have our dog, Chevy, with us and according to National Park rules, you cannot bring your dog on hiking trails with OR without a leash. Here at the pet rules for Capitol Reef Park specifically! So, we knew that our trip would consist of a lot of driving, sight seeing, short walks, and stopping at overlooks for photos!
When we arrived, we found a pull out where we could pop up ouriKamperto enjoy lunch before exploring the park! One reason why we wanted to get a rooftop camper was because we loved our experience renting a camper van inYosemite, and wanted a similar feel for our jeep! We loved how we could simply pull over and relax by taking 2 minutes to pop the top up on ourSkycamp! It was also just wonderful for camping because we knew we would be exploring until the sun went down, and we didn’t want to have to deal with setting up a tent in the dark. TheiKamperrooftop camper sets up in only a couple of minutes, so it makes life easy on the road!
After combining our love for diving and photography since childhood, during a decade of experiencing the world below the waterline, a change was eventually overdue. With a lifelong passion for taking pictures still in focus, we hung up the fins and decided on a big one. Long story short, sold our cottage in the country, pared down the possessions to a few boxes and packed what we thought we’d need on the bikes. We’ve lived a few trips but this one took the prize. A life-changing adventure ensued lasting over four years.
