How to Choose an iKamper Roof Top Tent

Often imitated but never duplicated, iKamper provides its customers with roof top tents of the best quality and shortest setup / takedown times on the market. Thanks to CEO Soon Park’s engineering background, there are always new and innovative products being developed, and thus a variety of models to choose from. So which one is most beneficial to you? Let’s take a look at the current iKamper RTT models and review the advantages and disadvantages for each.

SKYCAMP 2.0: THE UNPARALLELED PIONEER

The Skycamp 2.0 made its debut in 2019 as an improved version of the Skycamp 1.0, the most successful tent in crowdfunding history which raised $2.3 million in 2017. The Skycamp 2.0’s improvements include a thicker mattress, a wanderlust-inspiring world map graphic, stainless steel hardshell locks, canopy windows, new and faster Mounting Brackets 2.0, and a redesigned ladder. This spacious hardshell RTT features a fold-out panel that provides more space to really stretch out or bring more company.

Pros

  • Setup and takedown are only one minute
  • Fold-out panel makes room for king size mattress to accommodate up to four people
  • Hardshell locks provide peace of mind when unattended
  • 3-layer FRP hardshell provides protection and insulation
  • Aerodynamic and lightweight

Cons

  • Hardshell does not accommodate external gear
  • Fold-out panel leaves little room for internal storage when closed
  • Footprint may be too large for small vehicles

SKYCAMP 2X: SPEED, STORAGE, AND SIMPLICITY

The Skycamp 2X joined the iKamper collection in 2018 as a two-person version of the original Skycamp. In 2019, a new and improved version of the 2X was released simultaneously with the Skycamp 2.0. The Skycamp 2X features all of the improvements of the Skycamp 2.0: a thicker mattress, a wanderlust-inspiring world map graphic, stainless steel hardshell locks, canopy windows, new and faster Mounting Brackets 2.0, and a redesigned ladder. The Skycamp 2X lacks the fold-out panel of the Skycamp 2.0 and thus accommodates two people.

Pros

  • Setup and takedown are only one minute
  • No fold-out panel allows for the simplest setup and extra internal storage
  • More wind resistant due to lack of fold-out panel
  • Hardshell locks provide peace of mind when unattended
  • 3-layer FRP hardshell provides protection and insulation
  • Aerodynamic and lightweight
  • Ability to keep the ladder inside your tent while sleeping, providing more privacy and security

Cons

  • Hardshell does not accommodate external gear
  • Footprint may be too large for small vehicles
  • Two person capacity may not be enough for families

X-Cover: See More, Carry More

A hybrid between a soft cover and a hardshell RTT, the X-Cover made its debut in 2019. The X-Cover’s design eliminates the bulky PVC cover of traditional roof top tents and saves time. The X-Cover is also iKamper’s only RTT which has crossbars, allowing you to mount your favorite equipment and save space in your vehicle. Because the X-Cover lacks a hardshell, all four sides and a double Skyview provide sweeping, unobstructed views from inside.

Pros

  • Aluminum crossbars allow you to mount your kayak, skis, paddleboard, or other gear
  • No hardshell and a double Skyview mean better views from inside the tent
  • California king size mattress sleeps up to four people comfortably
  • Lightweight
  • Thickest mattress of all iKamper RTTs

Cons

  • No hardshell means less aerodynamic and longer setup (3 minutes) than hardshell RTTs
  • Footprint may be too large for small vehicles

SKYCAMP MINI: COMPACT AND CONVENIENT

The Skycamp Mini was released in early 2020 and is the latest addition to the iKamper RTT line. The Skycamp Mini has all of the improved features of the Skycamp 2.0 but with the benefit of a smaller footprint, making it ideal for customers who have a short bed pickup truck, a small sedan, or simply want to save space on their roof rack. This compact version of the Skycamp 2.0 accommodates two people and can be mounted above a truck cab.

Pros

  • Setup and takedown are only one minute
  • Fold-out panel makes room for two people while still saving rack space
  • Hardshell locks provide peace of mind when unattended
  • 3-layer FRP hardshell provides protection and insulation
  • Aerodynamic and lightweight
  • Can be mounted on any vehicle

Cons

  • Hardshell does not accommodate external gear
  • Fold-out panel leaves little room for internal storage when closed
  • Two person capacity may not be enough for families
