Like many National Parks, Zion has a free shuttle that will take you to many of the main stops along the Canyon Scenic Drive. What we didn’t realize, is that when the shuttle is running during the summer months, absolutely no private vehicles are allowed on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive!! The only access through the scenic drive is by the free shuttle bus! So we were pretty bummed when we saw that because we would have loved to stop at a few places along the route and since we had our dog, Chevy, with us- the shuttle was not an option because there are no dogs allowed on the shuttles. This is also where most of the trailheads are for hiking- so if you’re looking to hike at Zion, be prepared to take the shuttle (and don’t bring your pets along!)

After spending the previous day at Arches and Canyonlands, we woke up at the KOA in Green Riverand headed out to Capitol Reef which was about a 1.5 hour drive.

Again, we knew going into this trip that we would have our dog, Chevy, with us and according to National Park rules, you cannot bring your dog on hiking trails with OR without a leash. Here at the pet rules for Capitol Reef Park specifically! So, we knew that our trip would consist of a lot of driving, sight seeing, short walks, and stopping at overlooks for photos!

When we arrived, we found a pull out where we could pop up our iKamper to enjoy lunch before exploring the park! One reason why we wanted to get a rooftop camper was because we loved our experience renting a camper van in Yosemite, and wanted a similar feel for our jeep! We loved how we could simply pull over and relax by taking 2 minutes to pop the top up on our Skycamp! It was also just wonderful for camping because we knew we would be exploring until the sun went down, and we didn’t want to have to deal with setting up a tent in the dark. The iKamper rooftop camper sets up in only a couple of minutes, so it makes life easy on the road!

Nothing like a good old fashioned road trip with great company. We spent six days roaming around the Southwest corner of the US and had a blast off-roading, cooking gourmet meals and creating life long memories. Cheers, friends!

The Great Sand Dunes were so cool! The juxtaposition between the sand dunes and the big mountains in the background was so wild! We were there in Mid-May, and the temperature was chilly and it was so windy. They were actually advising people to wear long pants and shirts because the wind was so strong and the sand stings your skin in strong winds!

It’s here! 5 years of marriage for us! Every year, Tony and I forget about your typical anniversary gifts (and every holiday for that matter), and celebrate our marriage by traveling! We’re trying to hit as many National Parks as possible in our lifetime, so when we were deciding where to go this year- we knew Utah would be the perfect place because there are so many!

We love road trips. Something about the changing scenery, the podcasts, the conversations, and spontaneity of it makes me giddy. And we love that we get to bring our 10 year old English Setter along for the ride! So even though the drive from Minnesota to Utah is long, we decided to tackle this trip in our jeep, and stop in Colorado along the way!

VUELTAMERICA - EPISODE 16 RECAP

Entering into the Overlanding lifestyle, we didn’t have a good feel of how much we would get to camp along the way, but we were so surprised with all the camping opportunities at any given place with the pop-up iKamper. We ended camping a grand total of 148 nights along the entire trip. Out of those, we had a mix of “formal” campsites, “wild” camping in the lax outdoors of the southern regions, and “informal” camping sites, anything from parking lots to gas stations. If we were not camping, we were houseguests or stayed in hostels when we chose to stay in the cities.

VUELTAMERICA - EPISODE 15 ARGENTINA

This massive country is known for its wide ‘pampas’ grasslands, BA’s sexy tango dance, and more juicy meat parrilladas than you could imagine. The Patagonia region is shared by Chile and Argentina, so we hopped back and forth between the two (8 times actually) snaking around the Andes peaks and chasing the glacier lakes.

VUELTAMERICA - EPISODE 14 CHILE

After crossing the Bolivian border, we descended into the Atacama desert in Chile. We spent a few days exploring the majestic desert landscape before continuing south straight to the cosmopolitan cities of Santiago and Valparaiso. We didn’t wait long to get to the grand finale of all Pan-Am adventures: Patagonia. Touching the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern oceans, Patagonia is the southern region of the Americas, where only the brave and determined arrive to witness its glacial beauty and smell the freshest air in the world. Patagonia shares is pristine landscape with both Chile and Argentina, and one of the best ways to see Chile’s side is touring down the Carretera Austral (Southern Highway).

VUELTAMERICA - EPISODE 13 BOLIVIA

December 20, 2018 4 min read 0 Comments

You don’t typically see Bolivia listed as a top tourist destination, but with it’s off-roading dirt roads, massive uninhabited deserts, and the largest salt flat in the world, it’s a destination dream for an overlander. Bolivia reaches from Amazon jungle in one corner to the Atacama desert in the other with a variety of landscapes and wildlife, including supernatural surprises like bright pink flamingos grazing in deep blue, green, and red lagoons. One of the country’s major highlights is the salt flat, Salar de Uyuni, a prehistoric dried-up lake, leaving behind a 11,000 square foot desert-like salt flat. And there is nothing more appealing to an overlander than miles and miles of nothing but vast, wide beauty. During its rainy season however, December- March, the Uyuni salt desert floods, creating a shallow salty lake which can (and has) easily ruin and rust through any rig’s frame that dares to drive through, converting an overlander’s dream to a destination nightmare. We took perspective photos on the world’s biggest mirror, but opted on keeping our rig dry and salt-free. Little did we know, we were about to embark on our most adventurous overlanding journey yet…

Vueltamerica - Episode 12 Peru

Eclectic, delicious cuisine and ancient Incan ruins found in the Andes’ high peaks attracts foodies and adventure seekers from all over the world to none other than Peru. We crossed into Peru from Ecuador, crossing a long stretch of desert, and sticking to the Pan-Am highway. But after sampling the fresh ceviche and arroz chaufa at Huanchaco beach, we headed straight for those high peaks, toward theCordillera Blanca (white mountain range). In addition to its food and lost cities, Peru is known for some of the world’s most dangerous roads, cutting through the Andes mountains on exposed, unpaved paths with steep cliffs and steep up-hill. We heard about an exclusive turquoise lake called Lago Parón, the largest lake in theCordillera Blanca, only accessible by the brave, the fearless, and the 4 wheel drivers. We were intrigued.

Vueltamerica - Episode 11 Ecuador

Ecuador, the home of some of the world’s most unique features including the rare wildlife of the Galapago Islands, South America’s tallest volcano, Cotopaxi, and a huge monument marking 0°0’0’’ at the earth’s equator. We have good friends who live in Quito, Ecuador, so we were very excited to visit our friends and enjoy the luxuries of staying in a house for a couple weeks. First on the agenda was to check out the Cotopaxi volcano. As volcanoes and mountains are infamously known for, the weather can change within seconds and before we had even taken 5 steps, the clouds closed up, created a white ceiling of fog, and it began to hail. We welcomed the excuse to find a rock and rest, because even at the bottom, you could feel the high altitude effects.
